The first of the 40th birthday poems was inspired by the Baby Boomer adage, "forty is the new thirty." Of course, that is ridiculous. But Boomers like to think that we'll be young forever.
Forty’s the New Thirty
Forty’s the new thirty.
So, good news!
You’re still a baby.
In ten more years,
At fifty,
You’ll be forty –
That’s a maybe.
In twenty years, at sixty,
You’ll be fifty,
So I’m told.
In thirty years, no matter
What the tally,
You’ll be old!

The next birthday rhyme is complimentary (to the reader).
Until the last line.
Forty Years
Happy Birthday
Forty years –
a long time on this planet.
Though you are piling on the years,
you still have abs of granite.
Your face unlined,
Your skin so smooth,
As far as I can tell,
Not everyone can age like you.
(Take me, I don’t see well.)

The next funny poem is much less complimentary. Why be complimentary? It's fun to be mean to people stumbling through milestone birthdays. It's human. It's what we do. And this one ends with a twist and a half-decent compliment. Without further ado, here is the next poem.
THE BIG FOUR-OH!
Today, you turn the big four-oh.
Don’t take it as a hurtful blow.
Don’t notice if your hair is drab
Or if your arms have turned to flab.
Don’t cry about your wasted youth
(even if that is the truth).
Don’t feel regret, when all is told.
Better yet, do NOT feel old!
Don’t hide away, without a trace
Determined not to show your face.
But
if you’re fit and feeling fine. . .
Just tell them that you’re twenty-nine.

Okay, this is a back-handed compliment of a poem. Again, proceed with care!
YOU'RE FORTY!
They say that you’re forty.
We know it’s not true.
If someone is forty
It cannot be you.
See, people at forty
Have paper-thin skin,
And baggy red eyes.
(What a mess they are in!)
They always look sleepy
And cranky and tired.
Their license for fun?
On their birthday, expired!
But you look so fresh,
Kind of happy and spry.
If they ask your age. . .
I suggest that you LIE!
